Periodontal treatment following radiofrequency catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation may help prevent the condition from recurring, a new study has found.

The report, published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, found treating gum disease could improve the outcomes of ablation procedures for atrial fibrillation, a condition that causes an irregular heart rhythm.

Growing evidence shows periodontitis is closely linked to many other systemic diseases, including coronary artery disease, stroke and Type 2 diabetes.

This study illustrates the link between oral health and heart health.
