Study finds no link between invasive dental procedures and periprosthetic joint infections
A study in The Journal of the American Dental Association did not find a significant link between invasive dental procedures and late periprosthetic joint infections, Medical Dialogues reported. The study also did not show that antibiotic prophylaxis reduced the rate of late periprosthetic joint infections after invasive dental procedures. "In the absence of benefit, the continued use of AP poses an unnecessary risk to patients from adverse drug reactions and to society from the potential of AP to promote development of antibiotic resistance," researchers wrote. The ADA has more information on antibiotic prophylaxis.
