COURSE DESCRIPTION/ EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

Description: One of the biggest debates in dentistry today is whether to save or extract a tooth. One does not want to fall into the old adage, “that if all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail”. All too often, the restorative dentist is left with the ominous task of creating an esthetic restoration for a compromised tooth, dental implant, or a fixed partial denture. This course will review the factors that influence clinical success, helping the dentist to identify what success is and its relationship to patient expectations. The presentation will review parameters and help the participant to develop a thought process which can be used when making the decision to salvage a tooth and how one should consider its replacement in the event that it is non-restorable. Ultimately, the discussion will turn to the decision as to whether a tooth‐borne bridge or dental implant is indicated.

Objectives:

  • Discuss the factors which influence clinical success and treatment outcome
  • Review the periodontal, restorative, and endodontic considerations when salvaging a compromised tooth
  • Develop a decision-making process to follow when deciding if a tooth should be salvaged or extracted and why it may be the treatment of choice
  • Examine the limitations when salvaging or extracting a tooth and how this may impact patient expectations
  • Identify the parameters when considering a replacement for a tooth with a tooth-borne bridge or dental implant
