“LEGAL MATTERS IN DENTAL MALPRACTICE:
WHAT YOU REALLY NEED TO KNOW”
INSTRUCTOR CURRICULUM VITAE
William S. Spiegel, Esq.
Mr. Spiegel is a founding partner of Spiegel Leffler, PLLC, a firm known for handling more dental malpractice defense work than any other firm in the state of New York. He is former Assistant Corporation Counsel of the City of New York – Medical Malpractice Division and obtains multiple defense verdicts for his dental clients every year. Additionally, he represents dental professionals before the Office of Professional Discipline on a regular basis.
Marc R. Leffler, DDS, Esq.
Dr. Leffler is also a founding partner and has received his DDS from Columbia University, completed a residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at NYU, and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
After many years in active practice as an oral surgeon, Dr. Leffler entered the practice of law where he distinguished himself as a highly successful trial attorney. He has been named in the top 1% of trial lawyers in the state of New York, an honor based solely upon actual results in the courtroom. He has been chosen as a “Super Lawyer” by his peers in the area of medical malpractice defense for 2014, 15, 16, 17, 18 and 2019. This is a peer-based rating service of outstanding lawyers from more than 70 practice areas who have attained a high-degree of peer recognition and professional achievement. Only 5% of practicing attorneys in New York achieve this designation.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES & GOALS
This course will provide the important information about dental malpractice suits and disciplinary procedures by New York State against dentist, from the perspectives of two attorneys – both of whom are trial attorneys and one of whom is a retired oral surgeon – who represent dentists in those situations. The discussion will start with a basic overview of what dental malpractice suits are, what must be proven to be successful, and what steps should be incorporated into practice to help prevent them from happening, with a focus on record-keeping. The dentist will learn what the requirements are for maintaining records and what must be done when a request for records is received. Then, the actual “anatomy” of the suit will be studied, with an emphasis placed on the part of the suit in which the defendant dentist is most involved – the deposition – including what to expect and how to prepare for it. finally, the course will go into the types of events which can lead to the OPD becoming involved, what to do once that occurs, how the process unfolds, and what implications the OPD’s findings have. The presenters will open the floor to questions, and will be available following the conclusion to assure that all attendees’ questions and concerns are answered.
Mr. Spiegel, Esq, and Dr. Leffler’s planned educational program includes the use of a PowerPoint presentation, case review and a question and answer session.
