COURSE TITLE "An Overview of Cleft Lip and Palate for the Dental Practitioner"
INSTRUCTOR CURRICULUM VITAE Gerardo P. Romeo, DDS, MD Gerardo P. Romeo, DDS, MD, a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, is a Long Island native. He attended Adelphi University, graduated with his DDS degree from Stony Brook University in 2005 and his Medical Degree from Drexel University in 2008. He completed is training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and a transitional internship in medicine at the Hospital of Saint Raphael/Yale New Haven Hospital. Following a year of private practice in Suffolk County, he entered fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh where he graduated with a certificate in Cleft, Craniofacial Surgery and Pediatric Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He then entered academic practice at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. He is currently the Division Chief of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery for Northwell Health and the Residency Training Program Director of OMS at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. His practice consists of primary cleft lip and palate surgery, orthognathic and skeletofacial surgery and oral and maxillofacial surgery for children and Adults. He is actively involved in the American Cleft Palate Association and in organized dentistry at the local and state level.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES & GOALS Content: To review the incidence and pathogenesis of cleft lip and cleft palate. To discuss incidence in the US. To discuss the concept of team care and review standard surgical sequencing and management. To identify the considerations that may impact the dental professional when these patients are encountered.
Learning Objectives: To describe cleft lip and cleft palate. To identify the considerations that impact routine dental practice. To understand the proper time frame and sequencing of treatment to facilitate proper referral or management along with a multidisciplinary team.
EDUCATIONAL METHODS Dr. Romeo's planned educational program includes the use of a PowerPoint presentation, case review and a question and answer session.
